Match report - LHEO : Fairs Cup (5-a-side)
The sun shone the pitch was in perfect condition and the fans turned up in their thousands for the inaugural Fairs Cup. Barton Stacey Factory Non Athletic (BSFA) looked resplendent in their matching blue shirts, shorts, socks and boots as Captain Peter marched them confidently onto the pitch to meet the Queen. As they warmed up and smiled for the cameras there was an air of youthful superiority about them. Peter proudly showed off his team of Kevin, Pedro, Paul and Wayne who all received warm applause from the crowd.
The opposition known as the Building B Rovers (BBR) led by their experienced Captain John were elegantly dressed all in White. Whilst they did not look youthful they more than made up for it with a Mature Swagger. John introduced his team of Neil B, Bill, Mike, Laurent and Neil R to the crowd and received a standing ovation. The BBR were allowed the extra player as they were fielding an OAP.
Officials for the game were : Nurse Kate. Cameraman Vince and part time referee Peter.
It was a game of two halves (25mins each way) the first of which was evenly matched with crisp passing, running off the ball and vision being shown by both sides. The BSFA cleverly rotated their players so they each in turn had a chance to recover whilst playing in goal. Pedro's neat footwork was a highlight along with Laurent's tackling which mostly resulted with him ending up flat on his back. Some cracking goals were scored by both teams with the half time score being 8 to 6 to BSFA.
The second half started in a more sedate manner with some players still sporting a rather flushed look after the first half exertions. But Nurse Kate was able to announce all players on both sides were fit to play. BBR's mature years soon had an effect on the game with large gaps appearing in their defence. Bill showed tremendous agility in goal but was was not able to keep all the shots out (in fact most went in). In the end the final score was declared at 15 to 10 to the BSFA which was a fair reflection of the game.
None of the players will mind me saying that Kate,Vince and Peter looked the least exhausted after the game - It's all about pace. It was a game played in good humor and all players shook hands but did not exchange shirts after the game. After the game the teams met in the 'Jolly farmer' and declared it a huge success and MUST DO AGAIN.
Thanks to everybody who participated it was great fun to watch.
